Local track and field athletes kick off indoor season in Saskatoon

Jan 14, 2019 | 2:30 PM

The indoor track and field season is well underway, and young athletes from Prince Albert were in Saskatoon over the weekend for their first meet of the season.

Hundreds of athletes of all ages participated in the annual Downtown Lions University of Saskatchewan Sled Dog Track and Field Meet, with 49 competitors participating from Prince Albert. Youths took part in various events over the weekend including high jump, pole vault, hurdles, distance running and sprints.

While athletics are a big part of any competition, P.A. Athletics Coach Ron Poetker said he’s also proud to see local athletes being good leaders and teammates as well. Poetker said older athletes in the club will often work with younger ones to help them prepare for competition.

“We had some good finishes, some good performances, and the athletes are enjoying themselves,” Poetker said of the weekend’s results. “One of the goals I have for us as a club is to develop good leadership and good sportsmanship, and as a club, I think that’s something that we’re very proud of.”

The P.A. Athletics club has 75 local athletes signed up this year. Club members train several times a week at the Alfred Jenkins Fieldhouse.

“We celebrate wins, obviously, we celebrate medals, we also celebrate personal bests,” Poetker added. “It’s also celebrating individual achievement from meet to meet.”

P.A. Athletics will be attending upcoming indoor meets in Regina and Edmonton as part of the indoor season, and will also host the outdoor provincial championships in Prince Albert in June.
