Woman escapes encounter with moose

Dec 18, 2018 | 8:20 AM

Two people, including a 52-year-old woman, sustained only minor injuries after a close encounter with a moose Saturday night.

The vehicle they were in had been travelling on Highway 3, about 10 kilometres west of Prince Albert. Based on pictures posted to Facebook by Buckland Fire and Rescue, the SUV sustained significant damage. Several people reported through social media seeing several moose in the area that day. Conservation officer Kevin Harrison told paNOW wildlife are more drawn to the roads and highways at this time of year.

“You know when people are salting the roads to get that ice off, the animals like licking that salt,” he said.

Despite temperatures warming up last week, Harrison said he had not heard of any increased wildlife activity on the highways. He cautioned though that drivers still need to be alert and to use their high beams when driving at night.

“Moose have such long legs and so they stand a bit higher and so it’s harder for them to see a black figure coming down the roads,” he said.

Harrison said if anyone sees wildlife crossing the road, the best advice he can offer is slow down and wait for the animal to completely cross before proceeding. If someone comes across an animal that has been hit and is lying in the middle of the road, where it could potentially cause another accident, Harrison said the best option for people is to call the TIPS line and a conservation officer will come out to clear the area.
