Children’s Choir and Concert Band join to celebrate sounds of the season

Members of the Prince Albert Children’s Choir and the Prince Albert Concert Band joined together over the weekend to celebrate the season with music from around the world.

Saturday’s performance at the E.A. Rawlinson Centre for the Arts marked the third year the two groups have performed together.

Performances ranged from popular holiday classics like Mary’s Boy Child and The Christmas Song to Abba’s I Have a Dream and Welcome Christmas from Dr. Seuss, and included some more traditional holiday music from countries such as France and England as well.

Meghan Fournier-Mewis, artistic director with the Prince Albert Children’s Choir, said the choir is a great opportunity for local kids to learn and build their musical skills. This year’s it features more than 40 children.

“The kids are ages six to 16,” Fournier-Mewis said. “It’s a non-auditioned choir, people just need to sign up to be a part of it … We like to sing in two, three or four parts and in multiple languages as well.”

In her first year as band director, Kayleigh Skomorowski said Saturday’s event featured a mix of ages and musical backgrounds. The Prince Albert Concert Band includes musicians ranging from high school students to retirees, she said and features a good mix of sounds.

Saturday’s event ended with a joint musical performance of When You Believe, followed by a holiday sing-a-long. Skomorowski said the band was excited to join the children’s choir for the evening finale.

“It’s a great partnership of community ensembles,” she added.
