Modular condo building goes up in Shellbrook

Nov 21, 2018 | 2:05 PM

A Prince Albert based company is putting up a building which is the first of its kind in the north east.

Escalade homes has assembled a 12-unit condo in Shellbrook, which is made up entirely of modules stacked on top of one another.

“All units are completely finished inside all that needs to be done is the connections from one module to the next module,” Shannon Graham, the marketing and sales manager for Escalade Homes, said.

The building is across from the hospital in Shellbrook. Graham told paNOW the building will be ready to have occupants move in by January of next year.

Having the units built indoors before being assembled has some benefits according to Graham.

“The advantages are that they are built indoor in a monitored environment, so limiting exposure to rain, snow, dust,” she said.

Graham said units built indoors are stronger and more durable than buildings constructed outdoors.

The physical condo units are put built by RCM Condos, in Vega, Alta. in central Alberta.

“They (RCM) pre-built single family 12-unit condominium complexes,” she said.

The building in Shellbrook is three storeys high and has four units on each floor. Generally it takes one day for a building to go up, but inclement weather in Shellbrook delayed construction of the last two units.

Graham said this project is a special one for the company.

“It’s a growing community which has a need for affordable condominiums,” she said.
