Mintos pick up 10th win in a big way over the Stars

Nov 8, 2018 | 8:19 PM

After a brief two-game absence from the win column, the Prince Albert Mintos (10-5) jumped right back in with a 7-1 victory over the Battlefords Stars (2-11) Thursday at the Art Hauser Centre.

The win makes the Mintos the third team in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League to reach 10 wins, with the others being the Saskatoon Blazers (15-2-0-1) and the Swift Current Legionnaires (10-4).

The Mintos were led offensively by Carievale’s Turner McMillen, who had a pair of goals in the contest. He scored on a breakaway in the first period, with a nifty backhand deke. He then smashed home a backdoor feed from Dawson Springer early in the second period.

Springer had a goal himself, giving him 13 in 15 games this season. That’s one off the league lead behind Holden Knights of the Beardy’s Blackhawks.

Gabe Klassen had four helpers for the Mintos. He’s now tied for second in the SMAAAHL among 15-year-olds with 17 points (seven goals) in 15 games.

Also scoring for the Mintos were Logan Cox, Ashton Ferster, Chase Bertholet and captain Alex Ozar.

Mintos goaltender Carter Woodside was 59 seconds away from his second shutout of the season, but Shayde Peterson spoiled that with a one-timer on a 5-on-3 man advantage.

The Mintos will head to the Willow Cree Memorial Sport Centre on Saturday to take on the Beardy’s Blackhawks (6-5-0-3). The Mintos will return to the Art Hauser Centre to take on the Yorkton Maulers (1-16) on Remembrance Day Monday.
