Prince Albert high school holds special graduation

École St. Mary welcomed another graduate to its ranks Sunday afternoon. And it was a case of much better later than never for the honoured guest.

The school hosted a special graduation ceremony for Jake Diehl. Diehl was unable to graduate with his classmates ealier in the year as he was recovering from serious injuries he suffered in a longboarding accident in May.

The ceremony took place in the school’s chapel which was filled almost to capacity, as just over 70 people were on hand for the event. They included both friends and family. Many people were standing, as only limited seating was available. When Diehl entered the chapel, he was greeted with a standing ovation by those in attendance.

The process was the same as a regular graduation, with readings of scripture and a speech by school principal Mark Phaneuf. After the presentation of the diploma, Diehl played a song on his ukulele. 

Speaking to paNOW after the ceremony Diehl said he found the support overwhelming.

“Honestly, I just about cried, it was really nice, I was very happy for sure,” he said.

Diehl said that his recovery from the head injuries which he suffered has been progressing well.

“I am seeing way better, I am talking way better, I am hearing way better, it’s all slowly but surely, but getting better,” he said.

St. Mary principal Mark Phaneuf said he was happy to put on the graduation ceremony for Diehl.

“His recovery has been remarkable … and I am glad he’s recovered so well that we can have a meaningful ceremony with family and friends here today,” he said.

Phaneuf said they preferred to have the graduation in the school’s chapel as it provided a more intimate venue. The school’s principal added he was happy to see such a large turnout.

“Word got around and it was so nice to see so many people that could be here to support as well,” he said.

Besides his recovery, Phaneuf explained that Diehl is an inspirational person in the way he carries himself in his day to day life. Jake has been described by his peers as an old soul with a beautiful outlook on life who radiates positivity everywhere he goes.

“Really how he treats people, how he accepts people and how he interacts with people, he’s always been a kind and really loving kid,” he said.

For Diehl now that he officially has his high school diploma he has some plans.

“I am going to go travel, probably Asia, Thailand and Australia,” he said.
