Manslaughter charge stayed in Buffalo Narrows case

A manslaughter charge against a northern Saskatchewan woman has been stayed after a review of the evidence found there was no likelihood of a conviction in the case.

One count of manslaughter against Brenda Laura Tobac was stayed by the Crown in court earlier this week. Tobac, 52, was charged in connection with the death of 56-year-old Lillian Wuttunee last September in Buffalo Narrows.

The case was set for preliminary hearing on Tuesday, to determine if there was enough evidence to proceed to trial, but Crown Prosecutor Andrew Clements said a conviction was unlikely and the charge was stayed.

“It appeared to be essentially a tragic accident,” Clements told paNOW Thursday. “Essentially, there was an incident that happened in Buffalo Narrows where the individual fell and hit their head and as a result, ended up dying.”
