RCMP bolster holiday weekend presence

May 19, 2018 | 11:00 AM

It’s National Road Safety Week and RCMP traffic units are out in force for the holiday weekend.

With the fine weather, it’s expected to be busy with folks heading to the cabin and lake.

“When the weather’s nice you have more people out on the roads and the potential for more speeding and aggressive driving, “Cpl. Brian Ferguson told paNOW. “We just want to make sure everybody is as safe as possible and has an enjoyable weekend without any problems or collisions.”

He said RCMP will have an increased presence on the highways and in communities specifically checking for aggressive driving, seatbelt use, speeders and impaired drivers.

“We’ll have as many patrol units out as possible, “ Ferguson said. “ You’d be surprised just how much the presence of a few police vehicles makes. People change their driving behaviour and slow down. They may not know where we are but our presence makes a difference.”

According to SGI, with increased traffic on Saskatchewan roads and highways, the chance of being hurt or killed in a collision almost doubles over long weekends.

In 2016 in Saskatchewan, sixteen people lost their lives and 567 others were hurt in collisions over long weekends.
