The West Gate Community Center has a vision to assist the residents of a low income area our city to attain recreation and training opportunities that will lead to the betterment of their living situation.

This proposal aims to restart long term successful programs that we were no longer able to operate because of lack of funding.

The West Gate Community Center has been servicing the needs of the West End of the city for twenty five years. We have provided soup kitchens, emergency aide, health, recreation and social programming as well as numerous skill and personal development.

Our mandate is to help improve the lives of the residents of the west end community which is predominately made up of low income people.

We have a well trained professional and volunteer staff that has been dedicated to our mandate that has experience providing programming in literacy and essential skills training within computer skills, and entry level construction and food services.

It is our intention to expand our role and mandate throughout the community and partner with socially progressive businesses and build relationships within other government agencies that complement our intentions of providing recreation opportunities,as well as literacy and job ready skills to the residents of the West End.

In the past year we successfully created a 17 suite facility specifically for transitional housing issues with the help of community partners. The PAAC under the West Gate Community Center would like to initiate a number of community enhancement programs that will service our Westend community beginning in the next year :

Recreation Programming-Excellence Programs

  1. Youth basketball for boys aged 13-15 –North Central Lakers Program For preparation of local school teams and club teams. -this program would combine excellence level skills and expectations as well as a component of lifestyle intervention based on Union Temple`s Manhood Training Program that prepares adolescent boys to become responsible contributing young men.

  2. Youth volley ball for girls aged 13-15-North Central Lakers Program -again in preparation for excellence competitions and with a similar positive self and community awareness component that will pertain to our youth`s issues.

  3. West Gate Children’s Club -this is our under twelve youth after school recreation project that also involves and a meal program.

Skills and Trade Programming-Essential Skills Training

  1. Kitchen Works Program- Kitchen Works offers skills training to individuals to assist them to find long term rewarding employment in Saskatchewan’s food service and hospitality sector while offering literacy and essential workplace skills. This program consists of module based classroom instruction along with hands-on skills training and on-the-job mentoring while the students improve their employment prospects. This project would also contribute food items to our soup kitchen, weekly bread give away and youth recreation snack program.

  2. Workplace Essential Skills- This construction career training program includes skill specific training in the classroom, including modules of work site theory, through a sponsoring community college and on the job site experience. Under the direction of a certified expert, students receive construction training during their skill session instruction and participants also receive mentor support to follow upon the trainees as they enter the workforce. The West Gate Comunity Center would then partner with a local company who will guarantee employment and will train mentor the programs students to ensure their success after the completion of the program. This is an exciting opportunity for the program members and we have received positive initial feedback from the company.

Certificate Programs

West Gate`s intentions are to partner with a recognized training institute and provide certificate programs such as:

  1. Grade 10 ABE
  2. Entrepreneurship and Small Business Training
  3. Service Industries and Essential Skills Training

We require the services of two full time staff to complement our exsisting dedicated team to gain partnerships and access funding opportunities to create our invisioned programs to service our residents in need.
