Prince Albert Sports Hall of Fame 2011 Inductees

Feb 16, 2011 | 5:24 AM

Some new, but familiar faces, will have their pictures adorning the wall at Prince Albert’s Sports Hall of Fame in the Art Hauser Centre.

Six teams and individuals will be inducted into the hall of fame this year.

Nominations were based on a significant contribution to the sports community as well as a minimum commitment in the number of years a person has been involved.

It was a double honor for Pete Lukoni, recognized in both the Athlete and Builder categories for golf.

Lukoni said it is quite an honor for him to hear the list of accomplishments he is being recognized for.

Starting at just 12 years old, Lukoni captured the Tisdale Men’s Golf Championship.

He went on to win the Saskatchewan championship and represent the Province at the Junior Men’s Nationals. Amongst 30 tournament titles and other recognition Lukoni played on the Canadian Professional Golf Tour for three years.

Nearly 30 years after his first championship at 12, Lukoni opened Fairview Fairways in Prince Albert where he taught thousands of lessons.

“I really didn’t think I had accomplished that much,” Lukoni said.

“I feel very honored and humbled and appreciative that I’ve received this reward and I’m sure I’ll cherish it for the rest of my life.”

There are two inductions in the team category, the 1993-1994 Carlton High School Girls Soccer and the 1972-1973 Brown Motors Dusters Women’s Softball.

Dawn Kilmer, Principal of Carleton Comprehensive High School said this means a lot to their school.

“Our teams work very hard and our coaches work very hard at helping young athletes excel and our ‘93-’94 girls soccer team demonstrated skill and talent and won two provincial championships,” Kilmer said.

Terry Springett for volleyball and Basketball and Bob Romanchuck for softball, curling, and hockey have been honored in the in the Builder category.

“It’s something that you don’t set out to accomplish. It’s just a matter of living your life the way you like to live and giving back to the community.” Romanchuck said.

For the Meritorious service category, David Herbert will be inducted for Soccer.

“Really it’s a nice award but over the years the people that you worked with, volunteered with, really you share this award with them,” Herbert said. As he looked around at the many past portraits he added that Prince Albert must be the volunteer capital of the world.

Along with the 2011 announcement, several portraits from the 1998 induction were retired. Those past recipients were presented with their portraits.

Loyd Keller was all smiles as he was given his portrait to take home saying he’s sure he’ll find a wall somewhere to hang it.

“It will be nice to have it at home for the family to see … you have to make room for the other inductees. It’s an honor to have been inducted into the Hall of Fame,”

The 2011 Prince Albert Sports Hall of Fame Banquet will be held on May 21.
