Local Lions Clubs donate $100,000 to Rose Garden Hospice

The Rose Garden Hospice is now at approximately $3 million of their $4 million goal after a joint donation of $100,000 from local Lions Clubs including Prince Albert on Wednesday.

Garry Beaudry, president of Prince Albert Lions Club explained once he heard the hospice was raising money years ago, members of the club were interested in helping.

“Everybody’s been touched by somebody passing away and usually having to be in the hospital when it’s coming and I know my family we were going to move my dad to a hospice, but he didn’t make it unfortunately,” Beaudry said.

Beaudry decided to not only raise money here in P.A. but to reach out to the other clubs in their zone to fundraise additional money. With a target of $50,000 they met their goal with help from other lions’ clubs in Rosthern, St. Louis, Macdowall, and Christopher Lake. They filed for a matching grant of $50,000 with Lions Clubs International and District 5 SKN also pitched in $2,000 to help them reach $100,000.

“Anytime you see Lions out selling tickets, selling hamburgers, doing whatever, this is what the money that we raise (is for), things like this that it goes towards,” he said. “Whether it be a single family that’s in need, or a community project like this, sponsoring dog guides, you know we do everything we can think of.”

Each club does their own fundraising and Beaudry explained the COVID-19 pandemic has slowed down their efforts. One of their main sources of fundraising is at the Bingo Hall which was closed for much of last year. The small communities host events such as dinners to raise their money.

“Everybody chipped in what they felt they could, and every bit helped brought us up to the $50,000, which is great,” he said.

“I haven’t found a lion yet that said this wasn’t a good project.”

Editors note: This story has been amended to reflect the donation was made as a joint donation from multiple Lions Clubs.
