Cathleen Lesperance to Perform at Evergreen Artisan Market

Oct 29, 2011 | 9:45 AM

Local Recording Artist, Cathleen Lesperance, will be performing Saturday, November 12th at the Evergreen Artisan Market in the E.A. Rawlinson Centre. She is also one of the artists selling their work throughout the weekend.

Most people hearing Cathleen sing for the first time would be forgiven if they believed that she has always been singing.

The arrival of her debut album, “Gypsy As I Go” in 2008 marked her late entrance to the musical path with the album recorded with local Prince Albert musician Rich McFarlane, now of Mosaic Music.

Prior to the recording and release of her first album, she had very little musical experience, apart from a few eclectic early performances.

With a father who played guitar and a mother who sang at family parties, Cathleen comes by her musical ability naturally, although growing up she rarely sang and did not study music. A self-taught guitar player and singer, Cathleen’s voice is a contrast of both vulnerability and sheer force, with a soulful depth stretching beyond her years as a performer.

Her voice has been described by Belgium Rootstime Magazine as “..a clear and pure voice…destined to appear on many stages” and Yorkton this Week described her songs as “….there is honesty in her words…you can tell that she just wants to tell stories and the words flow as a result….”.

Picking up some fantastic reviews, the title track “Gypsy As I Go” was described by Belgium Rootstime Magazine as “..the title track is of such good quality that we could hear Emmylou Harris or Natalie Merchant do a cover of it..” In early 2011, her song “Highway” from the debut album won a CBC Saskatchewan Canada Reads contest when paired with the novel “Unless by Carol Shields”. Although the novel did not win the contest, the win resulted in wider exposure for Cathleen and the inspiration for a new song “Stormy Seas” from her upcoming album.

She now makes Prince Albert, Saskatchewan home and with the support of the Saskatchewan Arts Board , is currently recording her second album, titled “Brilliant Bright”. Featuring 12 new original songs, it will be released in early 2012 with plans for a CD Release tour.
