Prince Albert and Area Community Foundation hands out grants

Jun 20, 2013 | 5:10 PM

Every year the Prince Albert and Area Community Foundation (PAACF) hands out grant money to local organizations.

This year around 35 applications were submitted to PAACF with 18 being chosen to receive the $90,000 in grant money the PAACF had to dispense.

PAACF executive director Marilyn Peterson said the grant money comes from their own pool of money but also from the United Way of Saskatoon and from the Benjamin Moore Community Restoration Program.

Peterson explained that the PAACF meets with each of the funding partners in consultation and then arrives at a decision as to who will receive the funding.

“For the Prince Albert and Area Community Foundation we look at things like need is the big thing of course, it has to do with not only the organizations’ need but the target groups’ need is the big thing,” Peterson said.

The United Way has similar criteria and they have funded a number of joint programs with PAACF.

Peterson said Benjamin Moore has their own criteria which is based upon creating a better look and restoration of buildings, projects and property.

“[Benjamin Moore] works through the community foundations in a number of different areas throughout Canada, this is the first time Prince Albert has been eligible to receive the Community Restoration Program grant,” Peterson said.

“Each fund works differently and we work with all of them to help meet the needs of the community, which is what we’re here for as a community foundation.”

In the past the PAACF has given grant money to organizations like the YWCA’s Our House which is used towards additional services for people staying at Our House.

“We have seen the [YWCA’s] needs more than double, so we see that our funds have really gone to good use in previous years and that’s a need that’s still growing.”

Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Prince Albert is also another organization the PAACF has given grant money too to go towards their mentoring program as they expand into different community schools each year.
