Montreal Lake Cree Nation and P.A. SPCA team up

Mar 22, 2016 | 8:00 PM

Montreal Lake Cree Nation is taking a proactive approach to dealing with their numerous groups of residential dogs.

They invited the Prince Albert SPCA to come and collect their homeless dogs.

Montreal Lake band councillor Frank Roberts said they’re trying to protect the kids in their community, especially students who walk to school.

“Sometimes we have issues with (dogs) biting the kids. They get to be too many; They start to hang around in bunches, like little gangs.”

Roberts said the community is responsive and thankful for the humane response to Montreal Lake’s dog problem. “This way (people) know and understand their dogs and puppies are going to have homes eventually.”

P.A. SPCA manager of operations Liana Maloney said they’ll take as many dogs as they can, anywhere between 10 and 20 dogs. They sent three vans and six workers to collect the animals.

Though the SPCA already has a fair number of animals in their care, Maloney said the increase in pets won’t be a problem for them. “It is definitely maybe stretching us a little, but it’s for a good cause and it’s not anything outside of our parameters. It just means we’ll all be digging in and putting a little bit more work in for the next few weeks till these guys are adoptable and ready to go.”

Maloney said the SPCA will work with any First Nation community hoping to deal with their dog populations. “We are here for the animals and also here to work with the communities. We want people to trust us and know if they reach out to us we’re going to do everything we can to help them.”

Roberts said Montreal Lake is hoping to have the SPCA return to the community again in the near future.
