Junior Youth Empowerment Program

Feb 15, 2013 | 1:14 PM

The recently formed Junior Youth Group in Prince Albert is made up of young people between the ages of 11-14 who gather together regularly (every 2 weeks on Sunday afternoons) at the Montessori Preschool on Branion Drive to develop their powers of expression and sharpen their capacity to understand the moral implications of their thoughts and actions.

They do this with the help of an animator, usually an adult or older youth who acts as a peer and facilitator. The animator empowers the group to find ways to contribute to the betterment of their communities.

Rationale

The basic premise behind the program is the belief that junior youth (11-14) are capable of thinking deeply about the world and their place within it and that they need an environment that gives them support and encouragement. They like to belong to and work in peer groups without the fear of being ridiculed or bullied. They are energetic and inquisitive and have potentialities and capacities that are often not recognized and developed.

Objectives

The program seeks to assist junior youth to develop capabilities of expression – vocabulary, reading comprehension, and eloquent speech; and to better enable them to recognize the moral implications of the decisions they make.

The program materials seek to impart essential moral concepts and build certain attitudes required to live a fruitful and rewarding life. The junior youth group is also complemented by discussion, artistic, and athletic activities and opportunities for service projects. The group is guided by an adult who serves as an “animator,” motivating the group to strive towards excellence of character and service. In the future we hope to have an older youth serving as the ‘animator’ and that other JY groups will be formed in the community.

Service is a critical component of the program as the animators help the youth analyze the needs of their families and communities and, through consultation, design, carry out and evaluate service projects that help address those needs. In this way, the Junior Youth Empowerment Program is guided by the understanding that “The betterment of the world can be accomplished through pure and goodly deeds, through commendable and seemly conduct.”

The main objectives of the program are to help junior youth :

To articulate ideas with precision, clarity and eloquence

To recognize the moral issues underlying the choices they make

To translate high ideals and noble words into pure deeds

To contribute to the betterment of their communities
