Icehawks 6 Royals 4; Pasloski given builder award

Feb 4, 2016 | 9:20 PM

The Prince Albert Icehawks picked up an important win on Thursday to keep their PJHL postseason postseason hopes alive and well.

They beat the Saskatoon Royals 6-5 at the Kinsmen. With the win, Icehawks move up to sixth place in the North Division with a 13-22-1 record. To get into the postseason, they would have to stay ahead of the West Central Rage, who are two points behind the Icehawks with a 12-23-1 record.

The game looked simple as the Icehawks had a 5-0 lead a minute into the third period. But the Royals made it a lot more interesting, rattling off four consecutive to make it a one-goal game and make the Icehawks sweat.

Nick Patrick iced it for the Icehawks by scoring his second goal of the game with just 1:32 left to put the Icehawks up 6-4.

Icehawks forward Brett Boyer scored two goals eight seconds apart in the second period to give the Icehawks a 4-0 lead heading into the final frame. Rylan Couture and Jack Green also found the back of the net for the Icehawks.

Nathan Murray, Brant Kolybaba, Tanner Webb and David Yuzyk all scored for the Royals.

Pasloski receives builder award

Prior to Thursday’s game, Prince Albert Icehawks founder and longtime executive Allan Pasloski was presented 2015-2016 Terry Rak Builder Award.

Pasloski founded the Icehawks about eight years ago and served the team as its general manager among other roles.

“It’s nice to know the work that you’ve done to get the team going has been appreciated,” said Pasloski, who accepted the award with his wife Jan who has also done a lot of volunteering. “It’s more than just myself though, my wife was a big, big part of it to help me get it going.

“You wouldn’t do it if you didn’t enjoy doing it.”

He resigned from the team this past April citing health reasons and has since been replaced by Wayne Mesenchuk.

Although Pasloski resigned from the team in April due to health reasons, he is still strongly connected with the team and is regularly helping out as a volunteer. Case in point, right after he was presented with the award, Pasloski went between the benches and worked the penalty box door for Thursday’s game.

“[The team] means everything,” said Pasloski. “It’s kind of like your child. You bring him up and you’ve started it and been with him from day one. You’ve been through all the tough times. So it’s nice to see the team going, it means everything to me to keep the team running.”

Icehawks forward Brendon Boyer an All-Star

Icehawks forward Brendon Boyer was also honoured prior to the game. He was nominated as a PJHL North Division All-Star. Although he sat out Thursday’s game, Brendon leads the Icehawks with 64 points and 41 assists in 34 games played.

Final countdown

The Icehawks have four games remaining including Saturday’s home contest against the Delisle Chiefs. The Icehawks then go on the road for two games in Saskatoon to take on the Quakers and the Westleys. They’ll play their final regular season game on Feb. 13 against the Southern Rebels at the Kinsmen.
