Carnival Glass

Carnival glass is a type of moulded or pressed glass that always has a pattern and a shiny metallic iridescent surface shimmer. This carnival glass has been called by other names such as aurora glass, dope glass, rainbow glass and even as Poor man’s Tiffany. The reason why it was called Poor man’s Tiffany is because Tiffany was an expensive brand that specialized in blown iridescent glass.

The name carnival glass was popularized by collectors in the 1950’s because it was often given as prizes at carnivals and fairgrounds. However, it should be noted that the vast majority of carnival glass was actually purchased by housewives as décor for their home rather than won at carnivals.

Carnival glass is still produced today although it is not produced in large volumes like it was in the 1920’s at the height of its popularity. In the 1920’s when it was mass produced, carnival glass was actually quite affordable but in present day, they have become collector’s items and can be very expensive depending on the colour and cut of the glass.
