Habitat for Humanity

Sep 13, 2014 | 10:23 AM

Habitat for Humanity best achieves its mission through its Home Ownership Program which helps individuals and families in financially vulnerable situations build and buy quality affordable homes by reducing barriers to home ownership.

Barriers to home ownership are reduced by selling Habitat for Humanity homes with:

no down payment (families contribute a minimum of 500 hours instead),
no-interest mortgages,
payments set at 25% of gross income (including principal, property tax and insurances), and
homeowner training and support services.

This program gives families access to affordable housing while helping them build equity for the future, and as recipients of community support in helping them help themselves to escape the cycle of poverty and poverty housing, they are grateful for that support and are eager to contribute back to their own community and repay this by way of thanks.

Become a Habitat Homeowner

Every year we hold information meetings to explain the process.
Watch for announcements in local media.
Submit your email address to be notified of the next information session. Your email will not be used for any other purpose. http://habitatpa.ca/

At the sessions application forms are available.
A selection committee reviews the applications.
Selection committee members meet with qualified applicants in their existing residence.
The selection committee recommends to the board of directors which families should become homeowners.
Recommendations are based primarily on each family's need for safe affordable housing.
Selected families must complete 500 volunteer hours with Habitat before moving into their home.
The first year in the home is 'rent-to-own'.

Get Involved Financially

Why Habitat Needs Your Financial Support

While some supplies are donated, there are many other items that need to be purchased before a home is ready for a family including:

land on which to build the homes,
hiring of licensed trades people to ensure all homes built meet industry safety codes, and
any building materials and supplies that are not donated.Donate

Donations are tax deductible.

Volunteers are a vital part of our history and our ongoing success.
We depend strongly on our volunteers. They may be professional tradespeople donating a portion of their time and expertise, or first time builders who have never hammered a single nail.

Benefits – Experienced builders gain the satisfaction of knowing they have contributed something of real value to people who need it most.
Newcomers have the opportunity to learn construction skills in a supportive and safe environment, and feel the pride of giving back to their community and their society. Other volunteers work behind the scenes – on committees, raising funds, supporting families and advocating in their own communities.
Through their combined efforts, volunteers enable us to control the costs of home building, and make housing affordable.

Build Safety – Our volunteers are our life-blood. Without them we could not possible build homes for area families in need. We are committed to ensuring the safety of our build volunteers and affiliate staff is a top priority. But safety isn't a one-way street. It's a partnership between our Habitat team and our volunteers that requires commitment, training and awareness.

Get Involved as a ReStore Donor

We are always looking for gently used and surplus building supplies, household goods, furniture and appliances.

These may be items that you no longer need but they are still in good working order.
Perhaps you are renovating and have leftover materials that could be resold for a good cause.
ReStores across Canada divert over 20,000 tonnes of material from landfills.
You can help to reduce waste by donating items of value that might otherwise be thrown out.
