Once again the town of Kinistino has impressed Communities in Bloom judges on a national scale.

The small community, located approximately 70 km east of Prince Albert, has been involved in the Communities in Bloom program for nine years. Having won provincial competition twice for their category, the town was invited to national competition which has been the level they’ve been at for four years.

“We’ve seen a lot of changes since we began this program,” says organizer, Joanne Jensen. “Through the years we have made improvements to meet environment criteria such as recycling programs and our program for compost but we have made a number of other projects such as the hanging baskets throughout town and the gazebo. ”
The Kinistino Communities in Bloom committee has also undergone projects such as sponsored barrels of flowers, flower beds throughout town, a memorial wall and a rose garden.

Judges Gail Pearcy and Steve Preston were generally impressed with the town in all aspects criteria which is to evaluate the overall contributions of municipal council and departments; industry; businesses and the private sector – including volunteer efforts as well as issues of Tidiness, Environmental Action, Heritage Conservation, Urban Forestry, Landscape and Floral Displays.

“It’s a lovely little community, vibrant, need and clean with amazing treasures tucked away here and there,” reflected Pearcy. Preston agreed adding,” There’s been a lot of work done especially with cultural preservation and especially making sure the roots are maintained. The environmental programs are online and this is an ongoing process but overall everything is really good. ”

Results of the judging will be presented to the town of Kinistino in the fall.
