Cumberland College construction on target

The future Cumberland College facility in Nipawin is more than just beams and building plans now.

Valerie Mushinski, Cumberland College president, toured the new campus with the town council, members of the media and MP Randy Hoback.

She said the last time she saw it there were only steel beams, but now it's really coming together.

“It was a really good day because the building is actually far enough along that you can see what it’s going to look like,” Mushinski said.

“It’s a very functional layout and we think we’ve maximized our space.”

They’ve worked to make sure the school won’t have to corner themselves into anything, said Leslie Lamont, with Apm Construction, the contractor for the building.

“It’s versatile and a lot of things are removable like rails and stuff like that. It just allows for flexibility,” Lamont said.

According to Mushinski they hope to move in mid-June with construction finishing in April.

After seeing the building at this stage Mushinski said she thinks it will be something the community can be proud of.

“I think that this is certainly a legacy for the community and the surrounding area and it’s an attractive place for learners to come and learn. There’s state of the art equipment here for them to learn with and through. I think it will attract learners and that’s what we’re all about.”

The $7.49 million have been invested into the new facility from the Provincial and federal government as part of the Economic Action Plan, an initiative to support infrastructure improvements at colleges and universities.
