CanSurmount celebrates 30 years

Jun 7, 2011 | 9:30 AM

CanSurmount celebrated their 30th anniversary during their annual spring potluck picnic, Monday evening.

“I’m just grateful that we are able to celebrate this 30th anniversary and I hope we can celebrate many, many more,” said Donna Christopherson, co-ordinator with the Prince Albert CanSurmount.

“Prince Albert is the only remaining CanSurmount in Saskatchewan … and that’s just due to the dedicated and committed people that we have as part of our CanSurmount team.”

During the opening prayer at the event, the people of CanSurmount were compared to trees —they stand strong with each other through everything that life throws at them.

Among the more than 80 attendees were some of the founding members from 30 years ago.

“We have a core group of people and they just seem to be the heart and soul of CanSurmount,” said Christopherson.

As new members join, Christopherson said they all have the same goals.

“I think it is people who have been touched by cancer, they’ve had the journey themselves, and they just want to reach out and help someone else,” she said.

CanSurmount members work to encourage and support people with cancer, by providing information and making home and hospital visits. They also act as advocates for patients and their families.
