B.E.D.Rock Festival a Great Success

Struther’s Lake Regional Park was filled with the sounds of music Sunday as local rock bands and solo artists performed for a rock concert.

The B.E.D.rock Festival Society was recently formed to promote the genres of rock and blues music in the province.

“A group of friends and I were talking about the benefits of having a society. Country music musicians have the Saskatchewan Country Music Association, folk and world musicians have Ness Creek, bluegrass musicians have done well with the fairly recent Northern Lights Bluegrass Association – but there isn’t such a support, oddly for rock and blues musicians,” says Karen Cay, organizer of the B.E.D.rock Festival.

The society will function to assist rock and blues musicians of all levels find places to perform, promote the artists and work with SaskMusic to help these artists excel. The B.E.D.rock Festival at Struther’s Lake on Sunday was a fantastic start.

Musicians performing included two bands from the Jam Street Music Sessions , a local business that creates rock bands: Forgive and Forget and The Five Aces. Other fantastic music came from bands: Cars Collide, Constant Reminder, Mostly Wanted and the LJ Tyson band. Solo artists included Wade Spencer with drummer Conrad Corrigal, Liam Cay, and Teegan Boyer. The music and musicians represented the full spectrum of what the society wants to embrace: musicians as young as nine and with the full range of rock styles.

“Struther’s Lake was the perfect location for this,” says Cay. “It isn’t a well known park necessarily but has such a great facility, especially for families with kids. A secondary goal of B.E.D.rock is to have events for musicians that normally play in bars, to have an event they can have the best of both worlds: to play a great gig and still have a day out with their families.”

Funding from Northern Lights Casino made this event possible.

With the first festival a success, B.E.D.rock Festival Society will be looking to its next event and looking for musicians of all ages and rock/blues genres. Those interested may contact Cay at 1-306-864-7122.
