Toronto Wolfpack loan wingers Jonny Pownall, Ryan Burroughs to Barrow Raiders

TORONTO — The Toronto Wolfpack have loaned wingers Jonny Pownall and Ryan Burroughs to the Barrow Raiders.

But both players will be ineligible to play for the Raiders when eighth-place Barrrow (5-9-3) visits league-leading Toronto (15-1-1) on Saturday in Betfred Championship rugby league play.

Pownall was a first-choice winger along with Liam Kay last year in the Wolfpack’s inaugural season in the third-tier League 1, scoring 30 tries in 32 appearances. But the English native finds himself behind Kay, Matty Russell and Adam Higson, who is currently working his way back from injury.

“Being a third winger is always a difficult job. Being a fourth winger is painful,” said Toronto coach Paul Rowley. “Jonny needs to play. I’ve got to do the right thing by him.

“And also it enabled me to help out a friend of mine in (Barrow coach) Paul Crarey. It ticks a few boxes for everybody.”

Rowley, a former England hooker, and Crarey go back to their playing days.

The injury-ravaged Raiders only managed to dress 15 instead of the normal 17 last weekend when they were drubbed 52-4 by Featherstone Rovers.

Burroughs, an American, had been on loan to the London Skolars along with Victoria’s Quinn Ngawati. The Skolars play one division below the Championship.

Ngawati was sent to the Skolars to get playing time. But Rowley says he believes the 19-year-old will do better on home soil training with the Wolfpack.

“He’s more comfortable here,” he said.

“He’s still developing. He’s still a young lad,” he added. “We’ll continue our commitment to Quinn.”

Toronto tied Barrow 8-8 in league play on Feb. 11 and won 16-12 in Ladbrokes Challenge Cup play April 22.
