Local looking to be nation-wide leader

Jan 24, 2012 | 10:37 AM

One Prince Albert woman is smiling a stage-winning grin this month.

Brittany Bitternose, 21, placed as a finalist in the National Miss Canada Globe pageant.
Bitternose said she was excited to receive the call from pageant officials and felt it’s a great step in her life.

“For me being aboriginal, I thought why not do something like that where I can bring awareness over charities and be a good role model and try something new for myself,” she said.

Bitternose was one of 60 finalist chosen across the nation for her category. She said that she was discovered through Facebook, which lead to several interviews before being officially selected.

“She was very real in a way that she’s very humble and she talks about her passion with helping out and making a difference with actual children, which is her main focus … that’s what attracted us to her. That shows she is a humanitarian,” said Mias Tiler, with the pageant.

This Miss Canada Globe pageant started in 2000. Women from across Canada compete against each other to prove they have the skills to be a great leader to people across the world.

“We are a community based and humanitarian aspect pageant where the title holder requires to do community service and help out non-profit charitable organizations,” Tiler said. “We’re turning people into becoming role models and public figures.”

Before competing in Toronto in August the organization will help train the women in skills such as public speaking , hair, makeup and how to build a portfolio geared towards helping those in need.

Bitternose has a few organizations she is particularly interested in becoming a part of to make a difference.

“There’s a women’s shelter that I’m going to volunteer at and SPCA because I do love animals … I’m also going to do charity work and make awareness for anti-bullying since I was a victim when I was younger,” she said.

Too many kids are being bullied she said, explaining that relaying her experience will hopefully help other victims speak out.

Bitternose said she has one setback – the cost. She said that although the competition does cover a lot of the price, she still needs help with the $3,000 entry fee.

“What I am looking for is sponsorships because there is a fee to go in there and anything that can help me go forward in this competition is a great help,” she said.

“Anyone can help as just like a little bit of donations or anything like that will be awesome and you’ll be recognized as an ad or mentioned when I’m on stage.”

The competition will be taking place in Toronto during the third week of August.

This pageant is not new to Prince Albert. Brittany Saunders is a Prince Albert local who was Miss Teen Canada Globe runner-up in 2007 and placed second runner-up at the Miss International pageant.

The pageant will be televised via webcast on Youstream.
